Chapter Eighteen

Jason

“I’m telling you, he was here, right outside my front door, standing not a dozen feet in front of me,” Jason said, snatching a beer bottle in his hands and bringing it up to his lips so he could take a long swig. Placing it back down, Jason stared hard at his friend, ignoring the little fists from Jett punching his leg. “Thorn is back in Salem...I’m not even sure he ever left.”

Zeke sighed, rolling his head back and balancing his chair on the back legs. “And like I’ve said, Jason, I believe you! Thorn is wandering around Salem and our territory. That’s a fact. Hell, since you sent out a group to investigate that one site, there’s been a number of sightings of that wolf shifter. I still haven’t met him...but from what I’ve heard from you, he sounds like a giant—”

But before Zeke could finish, Jason threw a meaty finger up to his lips, shushing his friend and glancing at Jett, who blinked up at him from his side. Jason smiled, ruffling Jett’s hair, and then leaning down to whisper in his ear. “How about you and Axel go play in your room for a little while? Sound good?”

Jett beamed, his innocent smile bringing a little light to Jason’s day, and then ran off to drag his older brother from the living room down the hallway. Jason turned and watched his boys scamper off, waiting to hear Jett’s door close and their excited voices muffled. Satisfied, he turned back to Zeke, who was smiling.

“Your kids are still the cutest I’ve ever seen. Getting so excited about the smallest things…”

“Yeah, they weren’t like this before Brianna came. They were feeling the loss of their mother...and still do from time to time, but now that Brianna’s filling that motherly role…”

Zeke took a swig of his beer. “So, you see Brianna as their new mother?”

“Well, yeah, I claimed her, after all.”

“You...what?”

“I claimed her.”

“Stop saying it so nonchalantly, Jason.”

The alpha mountain lion shrugged. “What did you want me to do, go crazy from my lack of a mate? I’m alpha now, have been for months. Once Valerie passed, it was only a matter of time until my insanity would have taken over. And Brianna isn’t just filling a role for the boys; she’s helping me too. She’s mine, Zeke, and I suppose I have you to thank for introducing me.”

Zeke scowled and waved off the compliment. “Does she even understand what it means to be claimed? Knowing you, you just screwed her and failed to explain it all, yeah?”

To that, Jason just grumbled and sipped at his beer. Zeke was right; he hadn’t explained a whole lot to Brianna yet. He needed to take his own pace when discussing. Hell, he did tell Brianna he was a mountain lion, but of course, she didn’t really believe him...yet. Maybe if he just shifted in front of her, she’d switch her mindset. Ah, this won’t be easy, will it?

“Exactly my point,” Zeke said, continuing on with his thoughts.
